Sen. Webb: Veterans honored at Wurtland Middle School

WURTLAND Wurtland Middle School faculty, staff, and students came together Monday morning to honor local veterans for their service.

The school’s Veterans Day program featured patriotic tunes by the eighth-grade choir, student readings of poems and essays and a visit by state Sen. Robin Webb, D-Grayson. Fifteen veterans were in attendance.

Webb told the group about her uncle, James Webb, who was killed during World War II. She said he was active overseas, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While she never knew her uncle, Webb explained he continues to have an impact on her and her family.

Webb displayed images of her uncle on the podium and even read an excerpt from one of his last letters sent to his mother in 1943 before he was killed when his bomber was shot down near Hawaii.

Webb said Greenup County is nationally recognized as having more serve in the military per capita than nearly anywhere.

“I’m proud of that. You all should be proud of that,” she said.

Webb then encouraged the students to serve their country in any way they could.

After the program, Principal Amanda Powell discussed the area’s unique patriotic past, saying there are two Medal of Honor recipients who are from Wurtland.

“I think that makes us unique in the whole country, especially for a town this small. We really try to impress that significance on our students and to help encourage that tradition of service in them,” she said.

Powell also talked about essays the students recently wrote, with some shared during Monday’s event.

The essays were written about veterans who are featured at the Greenup County War Memorial in Wurtland.
