Sen. Harper Angel joins Sec. of State Alison Lundergan Grimes in calling elected officials to wear black

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is calling on elected officials across Kentucky to join her and women lawmakers in wearing black next Tuesday, January 16, in solidarity with victims of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse.

Sec. Grimes, Sen. Denise Harper Angel, and Rep. Joni Jenkins have issued the following statements:

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes:

“Next Tuesday is an important day as we gather to discuss the state of our Commonwealth. It’s clear we have work to do here and across the United States. On Tuesday, women in the Kentucky General Assembly and I will wear black in honor of the courageous women who have stood up to tell their stories of harassment and assault, and in solidarity with survivors. Our work will not be complete until every survivor has access to justice and every Kentuckian is free from harassment. We owe it to the Commonwealth to declare #TimesUp.”

Sen. Denise Harper Angel:

“It is long past time that we end this cycle of sexual abuse and harassment that has been propelled into the spotlight by #MeToo and #TimesUp. We must demand proper conduct be enforced in the work place. Anything else is unacceptable. We owe it to our daughters, granddaughters and all women to make the work environment safe – and free from this unacceptable behavior. I will be wearing black on Tuesday – and encourage all the women in the Kentucky General Assembly to also wear black – to show support and solidarity.”

Rep. Joni Jenkins:

“For far too long sexual harassment has been recognized as an unfortunate part of culture, but a loud chorus of people around the country, including me, are saying #TimesUp. In the General Assembly, I have been a tireless advocate for women and victims of sexual harassment and abuse. We must work toward a society and workplaces that are not only safe for women, but lifts them up. I am proud to join Secretary Grimes and my colleagues in wearing black Tuesday for the courageous victims and advocates who speak up against harassment every day.”
